Back in January 1943 I arrived at RAF Digby as one of
a brace of newly-qualified Sergeant Compass Adjusters (a trade of which
few had then heard - and everyone has since forgotten!).
Initially I was on HQ strength and my colleague and I plied our trade
principally with 288 and 411 Sqns. Subsequently we split our duties and
I took over responsibility for Coleby Grange (cycling there and back
daily in the Lincolnshire winds!). This arrangement coincided wit the
departure of 409 Sqn and the arrival of 410 Sqn in February 1943. They
stayed at Coleby for 8 months.
About May 1943 an establishment for my trade at squadron level was created.
Having built up a rapport with the 410 Sqn personnel I accepted an offer
to join the squadron and stayed at Coleby until we left for West Malling
in October. I remained with 410 until December 1944 (by now in France)
and still enjoy many of the friendships which began over 55 years ago.
