1917

Scopwick began operating as a military aerodrome sometime in the summer of 1917 as a satellite of HMS Daedalus — now the Royal Air Force College at Cranwell. This conclusion was based on several dated photographs allegedly showing RNAS cadets and their instructors taken during this period, with the field and sheds being used by the RNAS training school as an overflow. Researches by Digby personnel have shown such an early opening date to be unlikely and no documentary evidence supporting this have yet been found. The photographs show contemporary hangars, sheds and aircraft already in place around grassed runways and uniformed Royal Naval trainee pilots from the HMS Daedalus facility at Cranwell receiving instruction.

There is, however, documentary evidence in the form of the record of a conference held on Scopwick site on 24 October 1917 that confirmed its suitability for conversion to a training depot station in its own right and made such a recommendation that the site was suitable as a Training Depot Station.
