FOREWORD
I did not start out with any intention of writing this
little book. Shortly after I arrived at Digby, in Nov 75, I began to
try and track down
the date on which military flying began at what is now RAF Digby.
My researches kindled an interest and this book followed on.
Like its predecessors written by Brian Montgomery and
Eric Longhurst, it makes no pretension at being either a serious or
an official history.
I
have checked as many of the facts as possible but many have not been
corroborated or cross checked. These I have included in the belief
that they are true.
I hope any who know better will forgive me - and write and tell me
where I have erred so that my successor whoever he may be - may get
it right
the next time.
Lastly, I should like to thank all those who have
helped me over the past 2 years. In particular, I should like to
express my deep
appreciation of
the help and encouragement given to me by Mike Hodgson, of the
Lincoinshire Aviation Society and John Walls of the Newark Air Musieum.
Their
enthusiasm has been invaluable. To the many kind authors who have
given me permission
to quote from their books, I trust that the acknowledgement in
the bibliography in Appendix 2 will suffice.
Finally, I should like
to thank Mrs Margaret Williams for taking a busman’s
holiday and typing the proofs for me in her spare time. No-one
else could have read the dreadful scribble
