One of the last airfields built during WW2, RAF Sturgate was opened
too late to see operational service. A variety of training units were
based here during the 16 months of activity while 50 Sqn and 61 Sqn were
based briefly.
RAF Sturgate reopened in 1953 to accommodate USAF Strategic Air Command
units. Republic F-84 Thunderstreaks of the 508th Strategic
Fighter Wing operated from Sturgate possibly as late as final closure
in 1964.
The Northwest corner of this former RAF airfield is now home to local
flying club, Lincoln
Aero Club Ltd, who operate on a portion of the former
East/West runway. See their website and the photos for
more detail.
