A project has been ongoing since 2011 to rebuild and reinstate
Metheringham's original air traffic tower by November 2013 to coincide
with the 70th anniversary of the airfield's opening. The proposal is
to restore the back to the original layout and add it to the Lincolnshire
aviation heritage
trail.
In order
to fund the scheme the plan will be to revitalise the tower as a
home and the neighbouring nissen hut fire tender
shelter to provide holiday accommodation aimed at the aviation tourist.
Details of the planning application are here.
The tower restoration project has its own website at www.rafmetheringham.co.uk "The aim of this website is to publicise and document the restoration
of the RAF Metheringham watch office. A private project which in time
will be included in the Lincolnshire aviation heritage trail. The project
will also allow access to view the tower and the airfield from a vantage
point at the heart of the bomber station and should hopefully compliment
the already established Metheringham visitors centre. – Currently
no public access."
