The first airfields in Lincolnshire were set up under the auspices of the Royal Flying Corps in 1915/6, when the 38 Squadron RFC, formed as part of an initiative to counter the German Zeppelin raids, operated its 3 Flights out of RFC Buckminster, RFC Leadenham and Stamford (Wittering) with HQ at Melton Mowbray. It also used the relief landing ground at Gosberton.
38 Sqn did not intercept a single Zeppelin up to May 1918.
