A number of airfields in Lincolnshire lie along the path of the Viking Way, a long distance path which starts at the Humber Bridge and ends at Rutland Water, 194 miles later.

The 13 stations (I have identified) which are passed or lie with a mile or so of the Viking Way in Lincolnshire are:

RAF Bardney :: The footpath passes within 800m of the RAF Bardney site at King's Hill.

RAF Bottesford :: The footpath passes 1 km to the east of the former domestic site at Bottesford.

RAF Coleby Grange :: The footpath passes 1.5 km to the west of the former airfield site, along the B1202.

RAF Cranwell :: The footpath passes to the west of the College at Byard's Leap on High Dyke (Ermine Street).

RAF Elsham Wolds :: The path skirts the perimiter of the former airfield site to the north-east.

RAF Fiskerton :: The path passes immediately south-east of the former domestic site of RAF Fiskerton.

RAF Kirmington :: The footpath passes the airfield site, now Humberside International Airport, to the west.

RAF Ludford Magna :: The footpath skirts the perimiter of the former airfield site to the north and east.

RAF Saltby :: The footpath follows the most north-eastern corner of the peritrack around the end of the runway.

RAF Stenigot :: The footpath passes close to Stenigot and the mast can be seen to dominate the skyline to the east.

RAF Waddington :: The footpath runs along the Lincoln Edge, passing through Waddington village, 500 m west of the active station.

RAF Wellingore :: The Viking Way long-distance footpath passes immediately to the east of the airfield site along High Dyke (Ermine Street Roman Road) from Wellingore towards Cranwell. If you drive on the minor road from Wellingore to Leadenham along the top of the Lincoln Edge you will pass the former domestic site, part of which is now a picnic area and viewpoint, in the strip wood to the west of the road at Pottergate (SK984566). A public footpath leading from the Pottergate junction (987563) in a south-east direction led to Wellingore airfield. View photographs.

RAF Woodhall Spa :: The footpath passes the Petwood Hotel and 617 Sqn memorials in Woodhall Spa.

A map and details of other minor sites will be added in forthcoming updates.
